The 9th Connecticut Infantry Regiment was a volunteer infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was organized in New Haven, CT in September 1861 as an Irish regiment, composed mainly of soldiers born in Ireland or first generation Irish Americans.
It was assigned to the defenses of New Orleans and served in the campaign against Vicksburg in 1862 where it suffered significant losses.
It played a prominent role in General Sheridan’s victory at the Battle of Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864.
New Haven honors the 9th Regiment Connecticut Volunteers at the Soldiers Monument at Bay View Park annually.
