Irish Canal Workers Commemoration

Between 1827 and 1829, more than 400 immigrants from Ireland built the Windsor Locks canal. Many of them died during the dangerous and difficult work, and they were buried in a small cemetery along the banks of the canal. Over the years, their grave markers were lost, and the cemetery faded from memory. In 2022, the Hartford Division raised the funds to dedicate a monument to these Irish men, near the spot where they are buried. The March 22 event will include a wreath laying at the monument, brief remarks about the significance of the site, and Irish music.
